The Xiaomi Mi 11 Allows You To Monitor Heart Rate!!

Last week Xiaomi launched the Mi 11 smartphone in China. It is the first smartphone with the Snapdragon 888 chip from Qualcomm. The Mi 11 also has an AMOLED display with a 2K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, a 108-megapixel photosensor, and a 50W wireless charger.

AMOLED Display

The optical fingerprint sensor is a feature that few users pay attention to. It has become common in smartphones with an AMOLED display. However, the optical fingerprint sensor embedded in the Mi 11 also serves as a heart rate sensor.

Xiaomi has spent a lot of time talking about the gorgeous display and 108-megapixel photo sensor onboard the Mi 11. She hasn’t spoken once about the surprising new function of the in-display optical fingerprint sensor. . However, Chinese manufacturer Goodix revealed on Twitter that the Mi 11 is equipped with an “  ultra-thin optical sensor for displaying fingerprints  ”.

As the tweet below shows, this optical fingerprint sensor allows Xiaomi’s flagship smartphone to stand out for its ability to monitor heart rate. Yes, you will be able to measure your heart rate using the Mi 11’s fingerprint sensor.

Now for those who are wondering how can the optical fingerprint sensor be used for heart rate monitoring? Well, if you know the basics, an optical fingerprint sensor works by capturing images of your fingers using a tiny camera located below the screen. And as XDA Developers points out , heart rate monitoring works the same way.

Cutting Edge Technology

Most watches and activity trackers these days come with a PPG heart rate sensor. PPG stands for Photo plethysmography. This is an optical method that uses a light source (which may be the MI 11’s AMOLED screen) and a photodetector (the camera under the screen) to measure blood flow. Goodix seems to have figured out how to take multiple photos in quick succession and calculate the change in blood flow.

Xiaomi is already providing a heart rate monitoring function from the Mi Health app, which debuted with the overlay of MIUI 12 earlier this year. It uses the camera and LED flash to measure a user’s heart rate. The company may have configured the app to work with Goodix’s fingerprint sensor as well.
