Most watches and activity trackers these days come with a PPG heart rate sensor. PPG stands for Photo plethysmography. This is an optical method that uses a light source (which may be the MI 11’s AMOLED screen) and a photodetector (the camera under the screen) to measure blood flow. Goodix seems to have figured out how to take multiple photos in quick succession and calculate the change in blood flow.
Xiaomi is already providing a heart rate monitoring function from the Mi Health app, which debuted with the overlay of MIUI 12 earlier this year. It uses the camera and LED flash to measure a user’s heart rate. The company may have configured the app to work with Goodix’s fingerprint sensor as well.
