Again, TikTok Extends The Length of its Videos To 10 Minutes
Tiktok has extended the maximum time limit for videos on the platform to 10 minutes The change follows several months of testing, with the new limit rolling out to all creators now.
This change is just the latest of many extensions to TikTok’s time limit since the app launched in 2017. TikTok originally allowed videos up to 15 seconds long before the increase to 60 seconds. In July 2021, it increased the limit to 3 minutes before changing it again this week.
TikTok made no public announcement before introducing the change, consultant Matt Navarra brought it to general attention in a tweet on Monday.
Contacted after Navarra posted his message, TikTok confirmed the change, mentioning, We are always thinking of new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience. Last year, we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and entertain on TikTok. Today, we’re excited to begin offering the ability to upload videos up to 10 minutes in length, which we hope will unlock even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world The extra 7 minutes will allow creators to experiment more with their content, and also reduce the possibility of having to spread longer presentations over multiple videos.
As for TikTok, offering its community the ability to create longer videos allows it as Navarra pointed out to better compete with YouTube, and could help increase user engagement with the app As such, there is now a debate over which platform would be best for creators in the long run.
What’s the point of 10-minute TikTok videos?
But, one of the biggest advantages of TikTok is its accessibility. There is no need to use expensive camera equipment, video sets and even editing software to be able to post interesting content on the platform. All you need is your smartphone, yourself, and a content idea. You could say that TikTok is a platform for non-professional creators who don’t care too much about production value. This is also the reason why the short content of the platform was massively successful at the start. As for YouTube, the situation couldn’t be more different.
The biggest advantage of YouTube is that you can post extremely professional-looking videos on it, of almost any length imaginable. Gone are the days of the site hosting poor-quality amateur videos. Today, it’s a meeting place for creators who take professional video sharing seriously. Most of them have industrial-grade equipment and exceptional production qualities that can seemingly rival mainstream films. It’s unclear whether TikTok really wants to compete with this. But the strengths of both platforms are obvious.
It can also encourage older users to use the app which could increase their overall long-term engagement. One thing is for sure, the increased limit takes the app further from its roots, which might disappoint some of those who were there in the beginning. However, the fact that TikTok is gradually extending the maximum duration suggests that the community is, overall, happy with the changes underway.
