The VW Bus is BACK

VW’s classic bus is something everyone can relate to in some way. Whether it was in a movie you’ve seen, your grandparents talked about owning one, or you saw one driving down the road it is as though that bus never died. Now, VW is announcing that they are reviving the bus and are making it better than ever. Here’s what you need to know.

At the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, VW had a concept VW ID Bus on display, and it quickly stole the show. At the time there was no word on whether it would ever be produced, however, Volkswagen has officially confirmed that the bus will enter production in the United States in 2022. This VW bus, however, has some tricks up its sleeve.

The bus will be completely electric, and will not emit any emissions. At the Auto Show, VW claimed that it could achieve 270 miles on a single charge, but that mileage may not be achieved on the production model as things will undoubtedly change before it enters production. The drivetrain will be completely electric, and will be able to do 0-60 mph in five seconds, with a top speed of 99 mph. Volkswagen also said it could be used for hauling a large capacity of cargo.

Alongside the fully electric power, the VW ID Bus is packed full of technology. Owners will be able to unlock the car with their smart phone. The car will have three levels of autonomous driving, meaning it will be able to drive itself, but will still require an alert driver to be in the car. The steering wheel is rectangular and recedes into the dash when autonomous driving is active. There is a large center console screen that can be removed and be used as a tablet when the car is not in use, as well.

As far as the aesthetic of the car, it is simply futuristic as hell. These vehicles will be a sight to see on the road once they enter production. Until that point, we will just have to sit and dream of the possibilities.
