Late last week Elon Musk showed off SpaceX’s new spacesuit. This is the first look at the new suit, and Musk has already announced that more details would be coming this week. Here’s everything you need to know.
Musk posted a photo of the actual suit on his Instagram account last week, and captioned the image with some extra details. Musk said that the suit seen in the photo (right) is not a mock-up, and is the actual suit humans will wear. The suit has already passes testing in double vacuum pressure. The design itself is very clean, elegant, and functional at the same time. Musk noted it, “Was incredibly hard to balance esthetics and function.” Personally, I think he and the SpaceX team did a great job capturing just enough of both.
In his post Musk did not specify what the suits would be used for, but in the past he has said that they are meant to be worn by astronauts inside of SpaceX’s Dragon Capsule. The new suits are not designed for spacewalks as they are only pressure suits. They will be worn by astronauts during transportation missions in case the capsule they were traveling in would lose pressure. When SpaceX begins sending people to and from the International Space Station (ISS) NASA astronauts would wear the new suits.
Overall, the new suits combine a clean design with a number of functional uses. They look as though they just came out of the latest sci-fi film, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It will be interesting to watch this week as Musk makes more announcements about the new suits.
