Windows 10 Is Already Running On The Apple M1 chip

Apple launched its Apple Silicon chip earlier this year, and the first devices powered by the Apple M1 chip are already available, so developers are now working to optimize their apps to run on it.

Of course, when it comes to software development, one can’t help but think of the world’s largest software company, Microsoft. And the big question, now that devices with an M1 chip are here, is, does Microsoft want to push Windows 10 on Apple Silicon chips?

Craig Federighi, vice president of software engineering at Apple, says it’s up to Microsoft to decide whether such a project can be implemented because otherwise, the Apple Silicon chip is perfectly capable of handling Windows 10.

And it turns out that it really is since a developer recently managed to install an Insider version of Windows 10 on ARM on a Mac with an Apple M1 chip and run the operating system in virtualization mode. “It’s pretty fast,” developer Alexander Graf tweeted.

Microsoft has hooked on Windows for M1

It goes without saying that getting started with Windows on a Mac M1 is not exactly an easy task for beginners, but you can find all the technical details on this page. In the meantime, Microsoft has been completely closed on the chances of Windows running on Macs, although Apple itself has clearly issued an invitation to do so.

“It’s really up to Microsoft to decide,” Federighi said. “We have the basic technologies for them to do that, to run their ARM version of Windows, which in turn, of course, supports x86 applications. But that’s a decision Microsoft has to make so that users can use this licensed technology on these Macs. But Macs are certainly very capable of it”.

Time will tell if Windows 10 will officially make its way to M1 chips, but in the meantime, CrossOver and Parallels remain the best choices for most users.
