A few years ago, Microsoft made a final push for Windows 10 Mobile but ultimately had to stop it. The company has shifted its focus to Android, making Cortana and Microsoft Launcher standalone products. And the popular “Your Phone” app appeared shortly thereafter to allow users to connect their Android smartphones to a Windows 10 PC and on-the-fly access to notifications, photos, messages, and more.
The rumor is that Microsoft goes even further by providing support for Android Apps to Windows 10 in 2021.
The company currently allows some Samsung smartphones to run Android apps on Windows 10 PCs using the “Link to Windows” feature. This function allows you to display the applications of your smartphone mirrored on the PC. Windows Central’s Zac Bowden, however, says Microsoft plans to make Android apps available on the Microsoft Store. It doesn’t specify how the company plans to make it work, but ARM emulation could be the key to this issue.
“Microsoft is playing with bringing Android apps to the Microsoft Store under Windows 10,” Bowden says in his report. There is no concrete information on the progress of the project, but sources suggest we can expect it to take shape in 2021. Similar to the “Your Phone” app, Microsoft may start testing Android app support for Windows 10 with Insider program members next year.
The ability to run Android apps on Windows 10 PCs could give the ecosystem a boost, especially since newer MacBooks with Apple’s Apple M1 chip can now easily run iOS or iPad apps.
Microsoft must fight back against Apple
Microsoft has tried to make it easier for Android users to access key functions, like accessing notifications or photos, being able to make calls and more from the “Your Phone” app.
As mentioned above, the company only allows Samsung users to mirror their smartphone screen and run Android apps on their Windows 10 PC.
However, this functionality is limited to certain Samsung models. This feature has recently been updated to allow you to run multiple Android apps simultaneously in separate windows.
The ability to run Android apps on a Windows machine could be a game-changer. The Windows 10 – Android ecosystem will be opposed to Apple’s walled garden.
